Lake to file juvenile charges against 3 Nature Coast players involved in brawl

Written by Alan Schmadtke

The Lake County Sheriff's Office will file three juvenile complaint reports of three Nature Coast Technical School football players following an on-field brawl last month in a game against South Lake High.

The complaints will charge the players with misdemeanor battery, the sheriff's office said, and they stem from actions that send South Lake players to the hospital for treatment.

Sheriff's officials are declining to release the names of the players, all juveniles, because the charges don't rise above misdemeanor status.

The complaint reports will go to the Department of Juvenile Justic along with the deputy's report from the fight. The students will not be arrested, Corp. Jim Vachon said.

Juvenile Justice will contact the individual players once the paperwork is reviewed by their office.

The charges stem from a Nov. 7 fight after a fuse blew and field lights went out with 3 minutes, 45 seconds left in a game Nature Coast led 40-24.

Both sidelines cleared during the altercation, and game officials decided to end the game. Later, the Florida High School Athletics Association fined Nature Coast $10,400 and South Lake $8,500, suspended all players on both teams indefinitely and vacated Nature Coast's spot in the Class 3A state playoffs. Nature Coast ended the season 9-1.
