Boone avenges regular-season loss to Dr. Phillips

Written by Chris Boyle

Just three weeks ago, Dr. Phillips quarterback Nico Ranieri shredded the Boone defense for 377 yards and 42 points, ending Boone's 18-game regular season win streak.

Defensive tackle Ryan Moore had two of Boone's five sacks as the Braves avenged the earlier loss with a 17-7 win at Dr. Phillips in the regional semifinal.

"Our coaches sat down for 2, 3 hours every day this week, coming up with a scheme to take away their passing game," Moore said. "We wanted to make Ranieri think twice about who's coming after him every play."

Coach Phil Ziglar gave credit to his defensive coordinator Tom Carlson and defensive backs Coach Billy Daniels for devising the team's dime scheme, utilizing six defensive backs.

"It helped us a lot that we got three starting defensive linemen back tonight," said Ziglar. "They anchored the front and allowed us to use six defensive backs the entire game."

With the win, Boone is now 9-2 in the playoffs since 2006. More than half of those wins have come on the road.

James Washington racked up 76 rushing yards on 26 carries for Boone (10-2), which will play at Royal Palm Beach next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Boone scored on two of its first three possessions to jump out to a 14-0 lead. Sam Hutsell hooked up with receiver Dan Williams for 54 yards on the first three drives.

However, the Braves didn't record another first down until midway through the fourth quarter, placing the burden squarely on the defense.

"It's the greatest feeling in the world for a quarterback to not feel pressure to go out there and score every drive," said Braves QB Sam Hutsell.

Boone forced three fumbles including one by Ranieri on the Braves' 9-yard line in the second quarter.

Boone 17, Dr. Philips 7

FIRST-- Boone: Williams 10 pass from Hutsell (kick failed). Boone: Washington 2 run (Graham pass from Hutsell); DP: Hart 1 run (Moffitt kick). FOURTH -- Boone: Pruitt 26 FG.
