Cornelius Whitehead, the Mount Dora Bible star who orally committed to UCF in March, has switched to nearby Mount Dora High School going into his senior season. Lonnie Johnson, MDB’s coach, and Chad Grabowski, Mount Dora’s new coach, have both confirmed the move.
Grabowski said Whitehead has completed the necessary paperwork and will join the Hurricanes’ offseason program Monday. Mount Dora starts play in a 7-on-7 league at Apopka this Wednesday and expects Whitehead to be participating next week in the summer passing competition.
Whitehead, a 6-1, 172-pound rising senior, rushed for over 700 yards as a junior for Class 1B Mount Dora Bible. But he is projected as a wide receiver for UCF.
Grabowski said Whitehead will play receiver and safety for Class 2B Mount Dora.

Rising senior receiver O.J. Ross scored four touchdowns and Marlin Lane added three scoring runs as Daytona Beach Mainland outscored last season's Class 3A state champ, Cocoa, 53-39 in a spring football game at Cocoa Municipal Stadium.
The game started more than a half hour late due to a weather delay, but the Buccaneers then started fast, building a 34-3 second quarter lead.
Cocoa rallied to pull to within 46-39 before the Bucs got a huge score off an onside kick attempt by the Tigers. Ricardo Allen, a senior cornerback on the hands team, fielded the ball and ran 51 yards to the end zone.
Ross caught two long TD passes from Mainland quarterback Austin Parker, a transfer from Indiana, and also scored on a run from scrimmage and a 54-yard punt return.

Visiting Edgewater defeated Boone 7-0 Wednesday night in a Pink and White spring football game that was shortened to one half due to inclement weather at Norton Baker Field.
Edgewater’s Kent Gainous rushed for 46 yards on seven carries and scored the game’s only touchdown on a five-yard scamper with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter.
Boone athletic director Doug Patterson said the game raised an estimated $15,000 for breast-cancer research and drew an announced crowd of 2,500.

Winter Park and Freedom took the field for warmups but never got to play their spring game at Showalter Field Wednesday night.
Mount Dora and West Orange did play in Winter Garden, with the visiting Hurricanes scoring a 16-7 victory.
A thunderstorm rolled in just before game time at Showalter, forcing cancellation. The Freedom-Winter Park game will not be rescheduled.
"So frustrating," Tim Shifflett, Winter Park's coach, said afterward. "You practice for four weeks, you want to play. The kids certainly want to play."

Mount Dora football player Micha Howard, who was named to the Florida Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A All-State second team as a defensive back last fall, has committed to Averett University in Danville, Va., and is expected to sign next week.
Howard (5-10/170) was a two-way starter for Mount Dora, rushing for more that 1,217 yards and had 63 tackles for the Hurricanes. He also was named to the second team defensive unity of the Orlando Sentinel's All-Central Florida team.
He will be playing at the running back position in college, said Shawn Howard, Micha's father.
"He really wanted to play running back in college," Shawn Howard said. "That is what he has been playing since he started playing football."
Shawn Howard said the paperwork arrived from Averett on Tuesday afternoon and that his son could sign with by the end of the week. |
