About Charles King

Charles King is the producer of the weekly Orlando Sentinel Varsity Sports television show. Before that, he created and ran his own high school football Web site, FridayNightFootball.net, from 2002-07. (Then we hired him. Hee, hee.) While running his site, Charles also developed and produced Friday Night Football, a radio show that broadcast a high school game every week and followed up with a post-game show, for which he was a co-host. The show broadcast more than 90 games, including six state championships. In 2004 he created, produced, edited and co-hosted FNF-TV, a half-hour weekly TV show dedicated to high school football in Central Florida. You can e-mail Charles by clicking here.

Tentative Reclassification Plans

Print E-mail
Written by Charles King

Stat King | Blogs

The FHSAA staff prepared an eight-district plan for Classifications 6A through 3A as passed by the Board of Directors in November.  However, there was extensive travel within this plan so the FHSAA staff made a unanimous decision to change to a 16-district format which now appears on the FHSAA web site (and is attached to this e-mail).  Some examples of the extensive travel include schools in several districts making multiple trips in a single football season from Jacksonville to Pensacola or Niceville.  Also, in other districts there were schools in Naples and Ft. Myers making multiple trips from Southwest Florida to Palm Beach County, Broward County, Miami-Dade County and also to Key West.

Tentative classifications and district assignments for the 2009 & 2010 FHSAA State Football Series are now posted on the FHSAA web site.  Schools will have until noon on Jan. 9, 2009, to submit written requests for reassignment to a different classification and/or district if they believe the change is warranted.  Schools have the option of playing in its assigned classification or one classification higher. Schools in the lower 10% of the population breakdown of each classification have the option of playing down one classification if it is deemed more suitable for district travel reasons.  As of December 12, no schools have made a request to either play up or play down.

Three regular season county records were broken Friday, as three of the area's best players finished the year with strong performances.

Winter Springs running back Al-Terek McBurse rushed for 240 yards against Lake Howell Friday to bring his season total to 2,234 yards topping the Seminole County regular season rushing record (2,228) set by Lake Howell's Marquette Smith in 1990 by just six yards. McBurse also finished the season with 20 rushing touchdowns.

Oviedo quarterback Blake Bortles threw for 257 yards Friday against Osceola, bringing his season total to 2,472 yards breaking the Seminole County regular season passing record set by Lake Mary's Sean Connolly in 2006. Bortles threw for 23 touchdowns this season.

In Osceola County, St. Cloud's EJ White threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns Friday against Celebration. White finishes the regular season with 2,344 yards, breaking the Osceola County regular season passing record (2,293) set by Poinciana's David Tabor in 1999. EJ finished the regular season with 21 touchdown passes.
